THE RAY SHASHO SHOW WELCOMES SPECIAL GUEST ROGER EARL LEGENDARY DRUMMER FOR 'FOGHAT'

R O G E R   E A R L  &  THE LEGACY OF
 'F O G H A T'
Roger Earl is the man with the beat. Pounding his drums for over 40 years, this British rock ‘n’ roller is partial to rock & blues (always has been).

Roger left school at 16 to pursue a career in commercial art in London. to support his ‘drum & cymbal habit’. He did this for about 4 years (quite successfully) until he joined SAVOY BROWN at the age of 20 (“I didn’t receive payment for the first 6 weeks from SAVOY but at least I was ‘semi-pro’. I continued auditioning for other bands during lunch hours and after work during this time because I still wasn’t sure I had the job”) He auditioned for people like The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Jimi Hendrix, among others.

His five albums with SAVOY BROWN (one of the hippest blues-rock acts on either side of the Atlantic) between 1968 and 1970 were ‘Getting to the Point’, ‘A Step Further’, ‘Raw Sienna’ (which became a British Blues Classic), “Blue Matter’ and ‘Looking In’.
During a couple of lunchtime sessions, Roger, Dave Peverett, Colin Earl, Bob Hall (Savoy’s Pianist) and others, cut a rockabilly album called “Warren Phillips and the Rockets. He also played drums on Chris Jagger’s first album and Mungo Jerry’s debut album in 1970.
SAVOY BROWN did their first U.S. tour in 1968 with greats like B.B. King, Albert King, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Charlie Musselwhite, the J.Geils Band and saw great artists like Bobby Blue Band and Buddy Guy. After touring the U.S. he knew he ‘was home’.

In December of 1970, Roger and Dave Peverett left SAVOY BROWN to form FOGHAT. They hooked up with Rod Price and released their first record in 1972 on the Bearsville Label (a subsidiary of Warner Brothers) and followed with their first U.S. tour. They became an immediate success, following up the gold debut with lots of other gold albums….Rock n’ Roll, Energized, Rock n’ Roll Outlaws. 1975’s Fool for the City, which included ‘Slow Ride’, made them superstars. They continued the gold with Night Shift, their 1977 ‘Foghat Live’ (which went Double Platinum) and Stone Blue. These were followed with Boogie Motel in 1979, Tight Shoes, In the Mood for Something Rude, Girls to Chat and Boys to Bounce and Zig Zag Walk.

By the early 80’s, Punk was in and musical tastes were going through a transition period. Rod Price had left the band (replaced by Erik Cartwright) and Lonesome Dave had returned to England. Settled comfortably on Long Island, New York, Earl admittedly ‘didn’t know how to relax’. He played with the New England Jam Band on weekends for awhile with people like James Montgomery, the Uptown Horns John Butcher, Charlie Farran, Fran Sheehan, Elliott Randall and Mark Rivera. But soon the remaining three members, Roger, Craig and Erik began touring again as Foghat.

In 1993, the four original members of Foghat reunited at the request of producer Rick Rubin. Although the project with Rubin never materialized, they recorded ‘Return of the Boogie Men’ and were on the road again. The road, as it always had been for this ‘most traveled’ hard rock blues band, proved still kind to them. Three generations of fans were still boogie-ing to their music. 
By 1999, Rod had left the band again (replaced by Lonesome Dave’s great friend Bryan Bassett) and Lonesome Dave became seriously ill. He passed away on February 7, 2000. After several months of not knowing what to do, and a great deal of pressure to keep the band alive, Roger contacted Charlie Huhn (hoon) and asked him to join the band. The rest is history in the making. Now, 7 years later with a studio CD (Family Joules), a new DVD (The Official Bootleg Vol.!) and a new Double Live CD ‘LIVE II’ the band is doing better than ever!
When asked what made him emigrate from London, England to Long Island, New York (of all places) he simply says…’when we got off the boat, it was the first place there.”

Roger Earl is still hammering away….still a noisy sod. And this rock’n’roll, road-warrior wouldn’t have it any other way. He says, in the immortal words of Lonesome Dave Peverett, “I’m gonna roll til’ I’m old, gonna rock til’ I drop!

Foghat comes full circle with their newly released album entitled UNDER THE INFLUENCE Drawing from their collective musical influences, the band not only brought in some special guests from their past who helped launch and inspire the Foghat story, but also invited some new friends into the mix to continue the journey of this never idle band.

They started recording at their Florida studio, Boogie Motel South in 2013. In addition to Foghat members Roger Earl, Craig MacGregor, Charlie Huhn and Bryan Bassett,  two additional figures helped shape the sessions - Buddy Guy alumni, Scott Holt, who lent a hand in the writing, and added fantastic guitar and vocals to several tracks, and Grammy winning producer/songwriter, Tom Hambridge.

With their resident genius, guitarist Bryan Bassett at the helm, the project was going slow since Bryan was doing triple duty, playing, writing and recording the tracks, while in the midst of a Foghat tour. So Tom Hambridge came aboard. According to Roger Earl "I met Tom when presenting 3 awards to Buddy Guy and Tom (his producer) at the Memphis Blues Awards.  Tom said that he was a fan, and would love to produce a Foghat record. Putting that in the back of my mind, this was the perfect opportunity. Tom came down to Boogie Motel South to meet the band and we clicked and started writing together immediately. Working with him was inspirational!

During this time, an opportunity arose for some ‘other’ recording at Dark Horse Institute in Nashville for a friend's graduation project. Scott, Bryan and Roger recorded 6 tracks and a new ‘band’, ‘Earl and the Agitators’, with Scott Holt as lead guitar/vocals was born.  They are now playing some dates opening for Foghat with Roger and Bryan doing double-duty.  This great experience prompted Foghat to move the recording of “Under the Influence” to Dark Horse Studios where they brought in two of their major influences.

Foghat was ‘spawned’ from the British Blues band ‘Savoy Brown’ in 1971, so it was fitting to ask Savoy founder and guitarist Kim Simmonds to join in.
As Roger Earl puts it “Kim gave me my shot!”  As soon as Kim started playing, everyone was mesmerized!
Included on this release is a new recording of ‘Slow Ride” to celebrate the 40th anniversary. They invited Nick Jameson, (original bass player and producer of ‘Slow Ride’ on the 1975’ Fool for the City’ album) to play along with Foghat bassist Craig MacGregor who played bass on Foghat ‘LIVE’ (1977). They had a blast, and Foghat lead singer, Charlie Huhn, was as usual at the top of his game with his incredible vocals and guitar work!

And to round out the project the amazing Dana Fuchs added some of her bluesy/sultry vocals to a couple of tracks!

Three years in the making, Foghat had fun with this record and the result is an eclectic blend of rock and blues with a little funk and R&B on the side for good measure. It showcases the combined talent of all of the members both in the writing and the playing. This band never stops!

Lucie Arnaz has had an extremely diversified career spanning over 50 years in show business. She recorded her first album for Concord Jazz, "Just In Time," and her newest CD, "Latin Roots," is a celebration of just what the title says. Lucie has been traveling the country and the world with her various concerts for over 20 years.

Janet Robbins was born in Nashville, Tennessee into a musical family. At five she began playing piano, rocking her Dr. Seuss songbook, and soon began to tour the neighborhood with a friend performing their own songs and commercials. She gained critical acclaim for her role as a piece of Oscar Mayer bacon in a frying pan, which may have led to her becoming a vegetarian. Janet's childhood love of bugs (and consequent building of much needed bug hospitals) was a foreshadowing of her later love and nurturing of animals, particularly the multitude of rescued Siberian Huskies she lives with.

Janet eventually made her way to Los Angeles, playing and composing in bands. She then discovered a different compositional voice in the creation of atmospheric soundscapes that incorporate her vocal and instrumental talents as well as diverse cultural influences absorbed from her travels. This new musical direction led to her three CD series, Carrying the Bag of Hearts Interpreting the Birth of Stars, and was followed by the critically-acclaimed Song of the Gypsy Tree. She is also the featured vocalist on Chris Armstrong's second CD in the Spaceage Furniture Music series.

Her compositions "intoxicate and enliven En Live In the heart and mind." Janet Robbins draws on her rich heritage to weave sonic and visual tales of "magic and mysticism." She is like a musical spirit guide. Follow her and she will lead you on an enriching and captivating journey: "excellent and fair."

Janet Robbins grew up in a Nashville household that included legendary dad, Marty Robbins. Robbins was an illustrious country & western music entertainer with numerous hits including several that reached the pop charts. One of Robbins most memorable tunes was “El Paso,” a #1 chart topper on both the country and pop charts. Marty Robbins was respected and emulated by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Frankie Laine, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead and The Who. Marty Robbins was also a multi-instrumentalist performer.

She was told not to follow in her famous father’s footsteps by her dad. According to Janet, Marty Robbins kept his personal life private, not wanting to expose his family to all the glitz of show business. And she admits that she rarely got to see him perform. Janet stayed away from music for the first half of her life and was not a fan of country music. Instead at an early age embraced, The Doors hypnotic single, “Riders on the Storm.”

Janet would soon be captivated by artists such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno. Janet was also influenced by classical greats Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Dmitry Kabalevsky. Kabaleski Robbins music is categorized somewhere between progressive/ambient/ and experimental. But she has an indefinite talent that could easily embellish any existing genre.

FEE WAYBILL OF 'THE TUBES'
 IS THE SPECIAL GUEST 
 ON THE RAY SHASHO RADIO SHOW

Our very special guest today is the legendary frontman for
 The Tubes … Fee Waybill.

Born John Waldo Waybill in Omaha, Nebraska, the name Fee came by way of a bass player who thought Waybill looked like the King of Fiji, pictured on the cover of a National Geographic magazine, and began calling him “Fiji” which eventually was shortened to Fee.
Fee was raised in Scottsdale, Arizona where he sang and acted in elementary school assemblies which led to musical comedies in high school and then on to Arizona State University as a drama major. 

After moving to the mountains of northern Arizona to find his muse and living on brown rice and imagination he was enticed, without much difficulty, into being a roadie for the “Red White and Blues Band” on their way to San Francisco to make it big in the music business. Fee started singing background vocals and eventually the band combined with another Arizona band to become “The Tubes” in 1973 with Fee as frontman and lead singer.
The Tubes recorded ten LPs for A&M and Capitol Records from 1974 to 1985 and were headliners on their first tour, with 8 dancers, 7 band members, 6 onstage TV monitors, wild acts and an entourage of 35 including a pyrotechnic advisor, a video supervisor and two costume mistresses.

In 1984, Fee recorded his first solo album “Read My Lips” and collaborated for the first time with Richard Marx. The pair has gone on to co-write over thirty songs for their own projects as well as for other artists.
Fee left The Tubes after the 1985-86 tour to write and act and take a break from 14 years of touring. Moving to Los Angeles in 1986, Fee has since written lyrics for movie soundtracks as well as musical artists such as The Tubes, Richard Marx, Kenny Loggins, Toto, Steve Lukather, Pat Leonard, Vixen, Emerson Drive and others. Since 1991, Fee has won six BMI Performance Popularity Awards in recognition of his outstanding songwriting.

His acting credits include Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures, Ladies and Gentleman the Fabulous Stains, Private Eye, Bouncers, SCTV, MTV guest VJ appearances, along with three books on tape and various voice-overs on commercials.
1994 brought The Tubes back together with Fee for a long tour of Europe and a welcome reunion
. The band has continued to play their unique brand of rock and roll, adding new songs to the mix of the already popular.

“Don’t be Scared by These Hands” was released in 1996, Fee’s second solo CD, followed in 1997 by the eleventh Tubes release, “Genius of America”, the twelfth, Tubes World Tour 2001 and latest CD and DVD release in 2004, The Tubes Wild West Show. 

Fee continues to live in Los Angeles. He enjoys scuba diving, water skiing and hiking with his dog. He is also an avid polo player and owns four horses. He supports animal rights causes and participates in a number of celebrity charity events each year including Richard Marxs’ CF charity show, Alice Coopers’ Solid Rock Foundation Golf Tournament and ESPNs’ annual charity golf tournament. His interests also include Mayan ruins, history and art of the American West.
Fee is also a member (aka “Barnie”) of The Barn Theatre in Augusta MI, the oldest for profit summer stock theatre in the US, and has reprised his role as Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Show six times.

Since Fee’s first tenure at the Barn Theatre in 1999 he has revived the theatrical presentation of The Tubes show including props and more than ten costume and
character changes in the current show. After a busy summer schedule Fee is thrilled to take a break and reprise his role, for the 6th time, as Frank Furter at the Barn. Fee says, “It’s like a vacation for me to come back to The Barn to do Rocky again, it’s so much fun and I feel so welcome. I guess old “Barnies” never die they just start stumbling over their lines, and high heels”.
In July 2015, The Tubes started a 40th anniversary European tour, including dates in Germany, Sweden and the UK. Dates in the U.S. followed.
Some of The Tubes biggest hits include …"Don't Touch Me There" "White Punks on Dope" "Prime Time" "Don't Want to Wait Anymore" "Talk to Ya Later" "Gonna Get It Next Time" "She's a Beauty" "Tip of My Tongue" "The Monkey Time" and "Piece by Piece."


The Tubes continue touring the U.S and Europe in 2016.

Albert Castiglia.

Castiglia arrived on the International radar after Buddy Guy's iconic harp-blower, Junior Wells, heard the young bluesman sing and invited him into his solo band for several world tours. The gig was a shop-window, and though Wells sadly died in 1998, Albert stayed busy, joining the great Atlanta vocalist, Sandra Hall, for national tours in the late-'90s, while he held his own in onstage jams with artists ranging from Pinetop Perkins to John Primer. He has been named "Best Blues Guitarist" by Miami New Times, the respected alternative music magazine and honored by Roots Music Report with a Top Blues Album of 2011 and 2012. Castiglia was Born in New York and raised in Miami to an Italian father and Cuban mother, Albert Castiglia combines all influences to create his unique style of modern day blues with a traditional core.

After five acclaimed albums and decades of blazing blues-rock shows, you might argue that you've already made Albert’s acquaintance. But by the Florida bandleader's own admission, Big Dog is the first release to truly get under his skin. "I just wanted to make a record that best represented who I am, as a musician, singer, guitarist and live artist," explains Albert. "With every release, I've come close, but this time, producer Mike Zito helped me nail it. He and label boss Thomas Ruf wanted me to make a raw, rocking blues record. That's what I'm about. That's who I am..."

Released in 2016 on Ruf Records, Big Dog confirms that Albert is a different breed to the lightweights who dominate the modern music scene. At 46, he's slugged his way into contention the old-fashioned way: writing from his heart, bleeding into his performances, eating up the road. "I have no illusions about what kind of guitar player and singer I am," he states. "My style is raw, unadulterated, crude and heavy. I don't have the technical proficiency of other players, but I play what's in my heart and what I feel at that moment. When I write songs, they have to mean something."

Recorded at Dockside Studios, Louisiana, there's not an ounce of fat on Big Dog's eleven tracks, with Albert darting between self-penned originals, cherished covers and co-writes with some of his closest compadrés. "You could smell the mojo in the sweet Southern air," reflects Albert, "and you could feel the mojo in the recording studio. We had a studio-savvy band with an incredible amount of soul, and Mike's role as producer was the wildcard."
In 2014, Ruf debut Solid Ground was declared "smouldering and intense" by The Blues Magazine. Now, Big Dog ups the ante, offering eleven new songs to get your teeth into, and supported by a full international tour that promises bark and bite. If you thought you knew Albert Castiglia, you don't know the half of it. "I think this album is a major game-changer for me," he says. "No matter what happens after Big Dog's release, I'll always be proud of it. When we tour this album, you can expect a balls to the wall, rockin' blues show. Expect to get what I've always given you - my 100%..."
